Ever wondered what really goes on behind the scenes at a type foundry? At Factory738, creating a new typeface is more than just drawing letters—it’s an adventure that blends art, history, technology, and a lot of caffeine!
Today, we’re inviting you for a friendly backstage tour of how our fonts come to life—from the first spark of inspiration to the final digital masterpiece.
Step 1: The Spark – Finding the Big Idea
Every typeface starts with a question:
What do we want this font to say?
Sometimes it’s about capturing a vibe: elegant, playful, bold, or minimal.
Other times, it’s inspired by something unexpected—a vintage sign, a handwritten note, or even the architecture of a city we love.
At this stage, we sketch wildly, collect references, and pin everything on our moodboards. It’s messy, but that’s where the magic begins.
Step 2: Sketch & Explore
Next, our designers grab pen and paper (or iPads) and start sketching letterforms.
We experiment with:
- Shapes and curves
- Serifs or no serifs
- Unique details that make the font stand out
It’s not about perfection yet—it’s about exploring what feels right.
Step 3: Digital Refinement
Once we have sketches we love, we jump into font design software Glyphs.
Here’s where the real craft begins:
- Turning sketches into precise digital outlines
- Perfecting spacing and kerning
- Testing letters together in words and sentences to see how they flow
It’s a mix of creativity and pixel-perfect precision.
Step 4: Build the Character Set
A complete font isn’t just A–Z. We add:
- Numbers & punctuation
- Special symbols
- Accented letters for different languages
- Sometimes ligatures or stylistic alternates for extra flair
This stage makes the font truly usable for designers everywhere.
Step 5: Testing in the Wild
Before release, we test the font in real-life contexts:
- Headlines, paragraphs, logos, posters
- Light and dark backgrounds
- Different sizes and resolutions
We fix anything that looks off, tweak curves, and adjust spacing—often multiple times.
Step 6: Launch & Share
Finally, the big moment! We package the font files, create visuals, write descriptions, and publish it on our website and marketplaces.
Then comes our favorite part: seeing designers around the world use our fonts in creative ways we never imagined!
Creating a typeface is slow and detailed—but incredibly rewarding.
